LUKE GRENFELL-SHAW

At just 24 years old, Luke was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive sarcoma. It was a life-threatening diagnosis that would have stopped many people in their tracks. Instead, Luke decided to live life at full tilt.

Even during chemotherapy he refused to let cancer define what he could or couldn’t do. He would bring his bike and turbo trainer into the chemotherapy ward to keep training, and remarkably he even ran a 1:10 half marathon while still undergoing treatment.

In 2020, Luke set out on the adventure of a lifetime — cycling from Bristol to Beijing on a tandem bike. Along the way he invited others to join him, with more than 800 people riding sections of the journey across continents.

The expedition took him through mountains, deserts and cities, but the journey was about far more than endurance. It was about showing that even in the face of cancer, life can still be rich, purposeful and full of joy.

Luke’s ride raised over £125,000 for cancer charities and inspired countless people facing their own diagnosis. The story of the journey has since been turned into the documentary film “A Life in Tandem,” which has toured cinemas and community screenings across the UK and internationally. The film is now available to watch on YouTube.

Luke’s comeback story did not end there.

Now in remission, he has turned his focus to ultra-trail running and has gone on to win major endurance races, including the Val d’Aran 110K by UTMB — one of Europe’s toughest mountain ultra-trail events. Today he is a sponsored Brooks trail runner competing at the highest level.

Luke’s journey is a powerful reminder that cancer does not have to define a person’s limits.

As Luke says: “It’s my firm belief that we can all live richly and fully, even with cancer.”

At Coastal Commanders, we’re sharing stories like Luke’s remarkable comeback to inspire others, raise awareness, and remind anyone facing their own cancer journey that strength and meaning can still be found even after diagnosis.

Our Atlantic row is inspired by stories like this. We’re rowing to support Young Lives vs Cancer and Move Against Cancer, and for everyone who is writing their own comeback story.
