Cancer Comeback of the Month: Jon Reilly
In 2019, Jon was diagnosed with stage 2 testicular cancer. He faced nine weeks of intensive chemotherapy, a grueling period that could have put any athlete on pause. But Jon refused to stop moving. Staying active during treatment wasn’t just about physical strength—it helped him manage side effects, recover faster, and return to triathlon training and racing sooner than expected.
More than the physical benefits, exercise gave Jon freedom.

As he says, “Chemo was grim. But getting out in the woods—walking, running, feeling the sun on my face—it made everything feel better.” These moments of normality helped him regain a sense of control during one of the most challenging times of his life.
Jon’s comeback didn’t stop at triathlons. Today, he’s rowing 3,000 miles across the Atlantic with the Coastal Commanders, pushing the limits of endurance and reminding everyone that setbacks don’t have to define us. His story is a testament to the power of resilience, determination, and the human spirit.
Through sharing stories like Jon’s, the Coastal Commanders aim to inspire, raise awareness, and remind everyone facing adversity—whether cancer, injury, or life’s unexpected challenges—that they are not alone.
