Atlantic Row Winter Training Update 🌊

Over the winter we’ve been making the most of the quieter flying schedule to build consistent time on the water - with solid training rows each month alongside work.

From watching the 2025 race start in La Gomera, to long days offshore and refining the setup on Freedom, it’s been about building experience early and making sure everything is dialled in well before December 2026.

We’re not just aiming to meet the start line requirements — the goal is to arrive properly prepared.

We’re also proud to have already raised £1,000 for @younglivesvscancer and @moveagainstcancercharity with 9 months still to go.

24 Hour Row - 27th March 5pm - Anytime Fitness, Bishops Cleeve

Members of @meadster49 gym: @anytimefitnessbishopscleeve are taking on a 24 hour rowing challenge to support the Coastal Commanders Atlantic campaign.

We’ll be there too, jumping on the erg and helping keep the metres ticking over.

Every metre rowed will help raise funds for our charity partners: @younglivesvscancer and @moveagainstcancercharity as we prepare for our Atlantic row.

ATLANTIC TRAINING ROW - MARCH 26

Rowed 16 hours into a 10‑knot headwind and against the tide – 2 hours on, 1 hour off. Through the night, some calm seas, and a 4 am arrival in Porscatho for a brief rest.

Set off again as the wind built to 20 knots, sheltering in Fowey. Very bumpy night on the pontoon – Martin’s enjoyment was evident.

Rowing 3 up on the way back with tailwinds and sunshine all the way to Plymouth for the final slog.

3‑day March row complete. 9 months to race start.

Supporting Young Lives vs Cancer and Move Against Cancer.

Cancer Comeback of the Month: Luke Grenfell-Shaw

At just 24 years old, @lukegshaw was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive sarcoma - a life-threatening diagnosis that could have stopped him in his tracks.

Instead, Luke chose to live life at full tilt.

Even during chemotherapy he would bring his bike and turbo trainer into the chemo ward. Incredibly, he even ran a 1:10 half marathon while still mid-treatment.

In 2020, he set out on the adventure of a lifetime - cycling from Bristol to Beijing on a tandem bike, inviting over 800 people to ride sections with him along the way.

Through mountains, deserts and cities, the journey became about more than endurance. It was about proving that even with cancer, life can still be rich, purposeful and full of joy.

The ride raised over £125,000 for cancer charities and inspired countless others facing their own diagnosis. The journey was later turned into the documentary A Life in Tandem, which toured across the UK and beyond and is now available on YouTube (link in bio).

Luke’s comeback didn’t stop there. Now in remission, he has turned his focus to ultra-trail running and has gone on to win major races, including the Val d’Aran 110K by UTMB, one of Europe’s toughest endurance events. Today he’s a sponsored Brooks trail runner, competing at the highest level.

As Luke says:

“It’s my firm belief that we can all live richly and fully, even with cancer.”

We’re sharing stories like Luke’s remarkable comeback to inspire others, raise awareness, and remind anyone going through their own battle that strength and meaning can still be found after cancer.

Scott had been immune… until this week.

Sea sickness is brutal and unavoidable. The difference is learning how to keep eating, rowing, and functioning when it hits.

We’re practicing eating small, frequent meals, staying hydrated, and pacing our shifts so we can keep going even when the conditions hit hard.

It’s good we’ve all experienced it now, it means we know what’s coming, and we can prepare properly for the Atlantic.

Better here in February than 1,000 miles offshore.

All the 2025 teams are safely back on land 👌

22 hours at sea.

Punched straight out into the night and into some big seas.

Sea sickness made an appearance.

Retreated to anchor for dinner and a reset before heading back out.

Conditions were bleak. No hero miles — just testing the boat and ourselves in rough conditions.

Lots of rowing into a headwind against the tide, it is grim.

February did its job.
In March, we’re planning a big one.

In 2019, I was diagnosed with cancer.
Nine weeks of chemotherapy followed.

Movement helped me cope during treatment, recover afterwards, and find my way back to sport.

That experience is one of the reasons I’m rowing the Atlantic this year - to support people facing cancer and the families around them.

2025. What a year.

We picked up our boat.
Held fundraising events at Stansted Airport, the Plymouth Half Marathon and the Plymouth Boat Show.

Logged big miles around the Eddystone with @duncroy1 , trained along the Cornish and Devon coastlines in some pretty special conditions, smashed lots of @ocean_ready_ erg sessions and somehow fitted it all around a full airline roster.

We took on the @apex.officialuk challenge, completed @battle.cancer London, and finished the year watching the 2025 teams head off across the Atlantic, a proper reminder of what’s coming.

Plenty more training. Plenty more fundraising to come.

2026 is about pulling it all together.

We headed to La Gomera to watch the 2025 teams prepare for their Atlantic crossing - it gave us a great sense of what’s ahead.

We learnt from some incredible crews, saw the boats going out for their final systems checks, jumped on board different boats to understand setup, trained together in the @worlds.toughest.row training zone and even had time to explore a bit of this beautiful island.

In just 12 months it will be our turn.

Today we checked out the final prep for the 2025 fleet down in La Gomera, such a valuable experience.

We learnt a lot, met some great teams and watched their last confirmation rows before launch.
The race has come forward by a day and now starts on 11th December.

We are excited to take everything we’ve learnt back to the UK and get our boat race ready for our next training block on the water. Bring on the 2026 race!

Cancer Comeback of the Month: Kiera 💛

This month we’re sharing the incredible story of Kiera - one of our amazing cabin crew colleagues, and a reminder that early detection truly saves lives.

At just 25 years old, Kiera found a lump during her monthly self-checks. She trusted her instincts, pushed for answers, and was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer. Only one month later she began six rounds of chemotherapy, finishing in February, before undergoing a 17.5-hour reconstruction surgery in March this year — a huge physical and emotional challenge for anyone, let alone someone in their mid-twenties.

As soon as she was cleared to return to the gym, Kiera began training again. Not for performance - but for herself.

Training gave her structure, focus, and a way to rebuild confidence in her body after everything it had been through. She says it helped her appreciate her body more than ever especially seeing what it was capable of after everything it had endured. Getting back in the gym reminded her of the truth she now lives by:
Healthy body = healthy mind.

Kiera’s story is an important reminder to check your self regularly and to trust yourself when something doesn’t feel right.

We’re honoured to share her journey. And we’re rowing for people like Kiera - those who’ve fought, who are fighting, and who will fight. Help us support Young Lives vs Cancer and Move Against Cancer.

Great day getting it done at Battle Cancer! 💪

After Apex in September, it was a quick turnaround to get in shape for this one, but all the strength work over the summer with @ocean_ready_ had us in good stead.

Functional fitness was a whole new ball game for @jon.reilly. Some of the exercises were completely new to him, he was convinced he wouldn’t get the 50kg sandbag off the ground… but he committed and got it moving.

For @s_dingle59 and @meadster49 , drawing on their years of CrossFit experience, they absolutely smashed it. 🔥

When you’re preparing to row across an ocean — 3,000 miles, nonstop, self-supported — food isn’t just fuel. It’s strategy. It’s energy for 15-hour days on the oars. It’s recovery when there’s no rest day. It’s mental resilience when everything else breaks down.

This is what a typical training day looks like for me right now. It’s a work in progress, but every meal has a purpose: to build strength, maintain endurance, and condition my body for the extremes of the Atlantic.

Meal 1: “Gorilla Oats”
• 350g fat-free Skyr
• 1 scoop whey isolate
• 50g oats or 30g granola
• 1 tbsp almond or peanut butter
• ½ banana or mixed berries

Meal 2: Eggs & Toast
• 4 whole eggs + 2 egg whites
• 2 slices whole grain toast
• 1 tbsp butter
• 1 scoop whey protein
• 1 cup berries

Meal 3: Pre/Post-Workout Shake
• 3 scoops whey isolate
• 1 banana or 60g oats
• 1 tbsp peanut butter

Meal 4: Dinner
• 200g lean ground beef or chicken thigh
• 150g cooked rice, pasta, or quinoa
• Mixed vegetables
• 1 tbsp olive oil or avocado

Meal 5: Evening Snack
• 200g low-fat cottage cheese
• 1 tbsp peanut butter
• 1 tbsp honey and apple slices

Electrolytes? Covered.
Hydration? Constant.
Training? Relentless.

Still refining the nutrition. Out there, in the middle of the ocean, food is fuel — and survival.
